A New York judge has banned Wayne LaPierre from serving in any fiduciary role within the NRA for 10 years following a court ruling on financial misconduct.
01
Judge Joel Cohen denied New York Attorney General Letitia James' request to appoint an independent monitor for the NRA, citing concerns about potential disruption, costs, and limited benefits.
02
Cohen acknowledged that imposing an independent monitor could potentially infringe on free speech rights but emphasized that this was not relevant to LaPierre's 10-year ban.
03
Earlier this year, a jury found Wayne LaPierre and other NRA executives liable for misusing $5.4 million of the organization’s funds for personal luxury expenses.
04
The jury ordered LaPierre to repay nearly $4.35 million to the NRA, while the retired Chief Financial Officer, Wilson "Woody" Phillips, was ordered to repay $2 million.
05
Letitia James sought to appoint an independent monitor to oversee the NRA's finances, enforce whistleblower policies, and ensure that LaPierre could not return to the organization.
06
An expert witness testified that the NRA has lost over 1.3 million members since 2018, highlighting ongoing internal challenges.
07
James initially pursued the dissolution of the NRA in 2020, but the judge ruled in 2022 that such a penalty was too severe and not warranted by the evidence presented.
