The SNCF is rerouting some trains on regular lines but expects to cancel many services, with disruptions likely to last through the weekend until repairs are completed.
According to Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of SNCF, 800,000 customers are affected by these acts of sabotage, impacting major TGV lines.
Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete condemned the "coordinated acts of vandalism," emphasizing the deliberate timing and criminal nature of these attacks.
In response to the extensive damage, hundreds of railway workers are mobilized to reconnect and test cables, aiming to restore services by Monday.
The disruption comes just hours before the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games, with significant impacts on travel plans for the event.
Multiple metro stations remain closed all day on July 26th, and additional stations will close from 1 PM, affecting major lines and the RER C.
Parisian bridges, central to the Olympic opening ceremony, will be inaccessible to motorized and pedestrian traffic starting at 1 PM and 6 PM, respectively.
Security measures include restricted access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, with advisories against car travel after 10 AM due to anticipated traffic difficulties.
