Parker Finn, the director who also helmed the original Smile 2 follows pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) as she mounts a comeback tour while battling an infectious evil spirit that presents itself through eerie grinning people.
She brings depth and vulnerability to Skye as she grapples with trauma, addiction, and the harrowing supernatural threats, adding a new dynamics to effects.
With a larger budget Parker Finn expands the scope and ambition of the sequel. Even, Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky raves says that there is more gore, more lore, and more scares.
Finn's growth as a filmmaker is absolutely great in the stunning, elaborate set pieces and his ability to balance humour and horror.
However, some reviewers feel Smile 2 adheres too closely to the original's formula at times, making a bit on sequels.
Smile 2 holds a respectable 84% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 94 reviews so far.
It is projected to open in the $20-25 million range domestically, which would best the original's $22.6 million debut.
