Republican Fissures Revealed By Speaker Vote, Stalemates, Infighting Embarrass GOP

Despite winning a slim majority in the House Of Representatives  in the mid term polls , Republicans are struggling to elect a new Speaker  due to incessant infighting - posing grave questions about the party’s identity.

To be elected as a Speaker, a candidate must get 218 votes in the House of 435 members.

At present this Chamber has 213 Democrats & 222 Republicans.

Kevin MacCarthy has fallen short of majority even after 7 rounds of voting.

The Speaker of the House ,third in the line of succession for the presidency, leads the  Chamber & sets the legislative agenda.

Since Congress does not have a Speaker, there are essentially no members in the House- only members elect. Thus, no one can be sworn in.

Mc Carthy’s dream of becoming a Speaker has now turned into a recurring nightmare & embarrassment.

Thus there is a complete stalemate today in the beginning of 2023.
