It was an enthralling moment at the Paralympics when US Para Archery legend Matt Stutzman squared off and went arrow to arrow against Mexican para archer Victor Sardina Viveros. It was a moment to recognize as armless archers faced off against each other for the first time in the para games. Stutzman as usual was very accurate from the moment the game started. He perfectly nailed the target five consecutive times to secure a comprehensive victory in the round of 16 elimination match. He won the round with a score line of 142-136. It has rained a lot at the historic Invalides venue from early Friday evening. It was a challenging and tricky situation to play in such conditions but they overcame this phase and delivered their best.
After the game Stutzman shared some inspiring insights about the challenges of being an armless archer. “The future of the sport with armless archers is going to go well above and beyond what I started, and for me, that’s my gold medal. No one imagined armless people competing with armed people in archery, so what happened today was amazing.” Stutzman also talked about him and his competitor Sardina Viveros being the two armless archers among the four participating in this Paralympics. “Victor is going to be the future of the sport, of course I had to remind him that I am better than him right now.”
