From Civil War Veteran to 25th US President: William McKinley’s Journey Ends in Tragedy

The 25th President of the USA was shot on the 6th September in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. President McKinley was a Republican. He was the president of the USA from 1897 to 1901. This incident transpired at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. He eventually died eight days later

Born in 1843 at Niles, Ohio, Mc Kinney, was the last president to have served in the American Civil War. After the war, he settled in Canton, Ohio. He practiced law and married Ida Saxton. In 1876, McKinley was elected to Congress. He presided over victory in the Spanish – American war of 1898. As the 25th US President, William Mc Kinney saw war, economic growth, and assassination. He gained control of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.  McKinley restored prosperity after a deep depression(The economic downfall of the 1890s). He rejected the inflationary monetary policy.  His 1890 Mc Kinley tariff was highly controversial and, together with a democratic aimed at gerrymandering(dividing or arranging a territorial unit into election districts) him out of office, led to his defeat in the Democratic landslide of 1890.

In 1891, he was elected governor of Ohio. McKinley steered a moderate course between capital and labor interests. Hawaii became a territory of the USA  with an appointed governor.  McKinley’s foreign policy created an overseas empire and put the US on the world’s list of major powers. In 1897 the economy rapidly recovered from the severe depression, called the Panic of 1893. McKinley’s supporters in 1900 argued that the new high tariff and the commitment to the gold standard were responsible for the hardship of America.  He raised the protective tariffs. McKinley was defeated again in the 1900 presidential election in a campaign focused on imperialism, protectionism, and free silver. His second term ended early when he was shot on September 6, 1901, by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist.McKinley died 8 days later.McKinley is generally ranked as an above-average president.
