Kamala for the People: How Harris’s Historic Candidacy Could Shake Up the 2024 Race Against Trump

There is a reverse trend in international affairs. In the U.K., Rishi Sunak became the Prime Minister. Now, Kamala Devi Harris has become the Democratic candidate for the 47th U.S. presidency. On Thursday night, she ceremonially accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination to be its presidential candidate for the 2024 election. She said, “My entire career, I have only had one client – the people.” She accused her rival, Republican nominee Donald Trump, of serving only one client all his life – himself.

She vows a ‘new way forward.’ Harris, after her historic nomination, stated, “Trump is a unique man; the consequences of his return to the White House are serious.” She asserted that she will be “Prez for all Americans.” Harris began her speech by acknowledging the elephant in the room: her candidacy being a last-minute change from that of Joe Biden, but she linked it to her own story.

The 38-minute address—one of the shortest compared to Trump’s 92-minute peroration at his acceptance—never touched great oratorical heights. However, it was delivered with prosecutorial efficiency as she cautioned America about re-electing an incendiary opponent who caused ‘chaos and calamity’ when he was in office. Harris told Americans her life story, traced her career and convictions, showcased her record in office, and offered dark warnings against the serious implications of the return of Trump.

She reiterated, “Trump is an unserious man…imagine a Trump without guardrails”—on the country and the world. The DNC coined a slogan: Kamala for the people. The 47th Presidency is going to be a hot contest. Democracy is described as a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. So, the slogan ‘Kamala for the people’ is an apt slogan.

Now, Kamala Devi Harris is the Democratic Presidential candidate for the November 2024 U.S. elections. She is banking on a hunger for change. This strategy is, in part, born out of necessity. Bill Clinton has warned against overconfidence. It’s not an easy task for Donald Trump to defeat Kamala Harris. On the contrary, Harris is quite confident she can turn the fence-sitters in her favor. In short, it’s Kamala for the people. Whether this strategy will help her become the 47th President of the U.S., only Tuesday, November 5, will tell us. But Trump has got a worthy adversary, and the presidential debates will be quite interesting!
