Billionaire Elon Musk launched a new political party called the “America Party” on Saturday, July 5, 2025. This came just one day after President Donald Trump signed his “big, beautiful bill” into law during a White House Fourth of July celebration.
Musk announced the party on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying: “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Before starting the party, Musk ran a poll asking his followers if they wanted a new political option. Over 1.2 million people voted, with 65.4% saying yes to breaking away from the traditional two-party system.
This marks a dramatic end to what was once a close relationship. Musk was Trump’s biggest campaign donor in 2024, giving nearly $300 million to help him win. He even worked in Trump’s administration as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to cut government waste, before leaving in late May 2025.
The fight between them started over money. Trump’s new law includes $3.3 trillion in tax cuts, infrastructure spending, and stimulus programs. Government experts say this will add $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Musk strongly objects to this spending, calling it “debt slavery” and criticizing Republicans who promised to cut spending but voted for the bill anyway.

Musk has pledged to fight back against these lawmakers: “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame! And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
The dispute has turned ugly, with Trump threatening to cut government funding for Musk’s companies (Tesla and SpaceX). Trump even suggested he might deport Musk, who was born in South Africa and became a U.S. citizen later in life. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Musk’s new party has a specific strategy. Rather than running candidates everywhere, he plans to target just “2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts.” His goal is to win enough seats to be the deciding vote on close bills, forcing both parties to address wasteful spending.
However, new political parties face huge challenges in America. The U.S. has had two dominant parties for over 160 years, and the system makes it hard for newcomers to break through. Even Ross Perot, who won 19% of the vote as an independent in 1992, didn’t win a single state.
Some Republicans worry Musk’s party will split their voters and help Democrats win. Meanwhile, Tesla’s stock price has dropped since Trump’s threats, showing how Musk’s political moves affect his businesses.
As Musk builds his “America Party,” he’ll need to overcome difficult state laws about getting on ballots and face potential lawsuits—serious obstacles even for the world’s richest person who wants to change America’s political landscape.
