A poll published this Thursday by CBS Television indicates that Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the November elections in the United States, has increased his lead over Joe Biden to five points. The survey was conducted between July 16 and 18, following the assassination attempt on Trump. It involved interviews with 2,247 people and has a margin of error of 2.7%. The results show that 52% of likely voters would choose the Republican candidate, while 47% would opt for Biden. On July 3, the same CBS survey indicated that Trump’s lead over Biden was two points, with 50% for the Republican compared to 48% for the Democrat.
CBS highlighted that no Republican has won the presidential election by more than five points in over 30 years. The survey also noted that although Trump’s response to last Saturday’s assassination attempt has gained him sympathy, 26% of respondents said they are more likely to vote for the Republican, while nearly 74% said the attack had no importance. In the past 20 years, no conservative candidate has won the majority of the votes cast.
The CBS survey results give Democrats more justification for calling for Biden to withdraw from the campaign and make way for another Democrat with a better chance of defeating Trump. The study also indicates that the 81-year-old Democrat’s dismal performance at the debate about the president is having an adverse effect. The outcome suggests that Biden’s re-election campaign is beginning to falter.

The poll also reveals that, over the past week, Trump has increased his lead by one point in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, all key states for determining the election’s outcome. After the 78-year-old Republican was shot in his right ear last weekend, and despite the injury, he stood up with blood running down his neck and raised his fist as a sign of strength. Consequently, 54% of respondents believe his actions promote unity among Americans.
