We communicate through many ways. One of the oldest ways is to write a letter and post it. So the postal system helps us to be in contact with each other.

World Postal Day is observed every year on October 9. It is the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, which started in 1874. This year’s theme is “150 Years of Enabling Communication and Empowering People Across Nations.”

This theme is a celebration of the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The UPU was established to simplify international mail services and create a unified Postal system. It facilitated smoother mail exchange between countries.

By the simple method of sending greetings on birthdays, we wish for a long life of near and dear ones.

India, the biggest country with a population of nearly 1.5 billion, has got the cheapest Postal system. Even in the 21st century, one can send a postcard costing just half a rupee or 50 paise. In the U.K., the postcode is a unique code that shows the exact location of the destination of your mail. Till a few years back, telegram was the quickest method of sending a message in India.

The 6-digit PIN system was introduced in the Indian postal system in 1972 by Pandit S B Velankar, a high postal Officer and a great Sanskrit scholar. With that PIN, it became easier to sort out letters and reach the destination earlier. With just 25 paise worth of postage stamps, a small magazine can be posted under the book post system.

Even today, the Postal parcel service is cheaper than courier service. For armed forces, there is an army post office which competently sends letters to the army, navy and Air Force personnel anywhere in India.

The Headquarters of UPU is at Bern, Switzerland. The Director General of UPU, Masahiko Metoki of Japan, has sent his greetings to all the well-wishers and users of postal services of the world on the occasion of World Postal Day.

Though e-mail and mobile have replaced letters, the postal system still plays an important role in our lives.
