Nicole Kidman won the Best Actress award at the Venice International Film Festival for her role in A24’s “Babygirl,” directed by Halina Reijn. In the film, Kidman portrays a CEO of a tech company involved in an affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson.
The production team worked with intimacy coordinator Lizzie Talbot for the film’s explicit scenes. When asked about starring in one of the hottest movies this year Dickinson replied, “They’re enjoying it. I don’t care what they describe it as, yeah, yeah, as long as it’s as long as they like it”.
At the Academy Museum Gala, Kidman discussed the challenges of her role: “Actually doing it justice and trying to be open and raw and available each day in every which way to explore. Because the nature of that film, it was either going to be completely vulnerable and exposed, or you were going to be protected, and then the thing wouldn’t connect.” During their initial discussions with Reijn, she added, “Just give us a safe space,” and “Please don’t make me look like a fool.”
During filming, Kidman needed occasional breaks. “There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm anymore,'” Kidman told The Sun. She would sometimes say, “Don’t come near me” and “I hate doing this” during filming. Even Dickinson revealed he would tell the cast and crew to “go away for a second” when he needed space on set.

The film includes a scene where Dickinson dances to George Michael’s “Father Figure” without prior rehearsal. “That was just me moving,” Dickinson said. “Halina put on the song and said, ‘Just dance.’ So I just had a little groove. Maybe I had a little whiskey before. But it was embarrassing.”
Dickinson expressed admiration for working with Kidman: “She is like the most comforting, warm performer to work across from. She sets the tone on set, and she makes it so easy to be vulnerable and to be funny, because she is so daring.” He admitted to “pinching” himself daily about co-starring with her, saying, “Subtly, I kept asking her things like, ‘What was it like working with Stanley Kubrick?’ I was there always like poking at the fact that she is this monolithic figure in cinema.”
Kidman, who has previously performed intimate scenes in films like “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Moulin Rouge,” explained her approach to People magazine: “I’ve always been on a quest as an actor, I’m always going, ‘Where have I not been? And what can I explore as a human being?'”
“Babygirl,” which also features Antonio Banderas as Kidman’s husband, will be released in theaters on Christmas Day.
