It is also celebrated as National Milk Day. Today, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of adoption of the Indian Constitution. It was on this day that the Constituent Assembly, presided over by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, adopted the constitution. The year was 1949. The presenter was Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the first Law Minister of India. He was the chairman of the drafting committee of the charter of our laws. That is why he is generally known as the father of the Indian Constitution. During the last 74 years (as the Constitution came into force on 26 Jan, 1950), the national law charter has been amended more than 100 times. It is time we pay tribute to those stalwarts who made this document. Most of them were freedom fighters.
26th November also happens to be the National Milk Day. India is the largest producer of milk. The milk production is mainly a cooperative effort. In this respect, Amul (Anand Milk Union Limited) has a leading role. The Amul was inspired by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister and a great freedom fighter of our country. He brought a young Dr. Varghese Kurien to Amul, and Dr. Kurien revolutionized the dairy field in India. It is on his birthday that every year National Milk Day is observed.

It is a very happy coincidence that 2025 is being declared as the International Year of Cooperatives in New Delhi at the ICA Global Conference. Amul alone procures over 1100 crore litres of milk every year. Its annual turnover is about Rs. 80,000 crores. Thus Amul is the world’s largest cooperative society. Today rich tributes are being paid to the makers of our Constitution. It may be noted here that Dr. Varghese Kurien, the father of white revolution, preferred tea over milk.
In short, on the occasion of Constitution Day, let us remember the freedom fighters who could achieve the dream of a sovereign democratic, secular and socialist Republic on this day 75 years back. Let us also not forget Sardar Patel and Dr. Varghese Kurien, the pioneers of “The White Revolution” in India, the largest country in the world in terms of its population!
