Argentina created history by winning back-to-back Copa America titles, despite the iconic Lionel Messi’s injury. Throughout the match, Argentina displayed championship-level play, with many ebbs and flows. No team was willing to back down until Lautaro Martinez scored a brilliant goal in extra time, bringing Argentina to the brink of victory against Colombia. After the second half, in the 64th minute, Lionel Messi was injured and had to be substituted. A tearful Messi left the field, and his colleagues took the responsibility to win the title for their country.

The match’s start was delayed due to a large number of ticketless fans trying to enter the stadium, requiring significant intervention from security personnel to resolve the issue. Back-to-back Copa America titles and a World Cup win were much needed for Messi and Argentine fans. Messi had hinted that this tournament could be his last major one, and it ended like a fairy tale. Another Argentine veteran, Angel Di Maria, also retired after the victory. Following the Copa America 2024 win, Argentina and Spain are now the only teams to have won a hat-trick of major tournaments.

An elated Argentine coach, Lionel Scaloni, said, “I don’t know if it marks an era, but it’s true this team never ceases to surprise. They overcame the difficulties of a very difficult match, with a very complicated opponent and without a good first half. In the second half, I think we improved and deserved to win, and then, always in extra time, in the long run, the team always finds something extra. It’s gratifying to see them play, and I’m eternally grateful for the way they gave their all.” Scaloni was also happy to see Argentine fans celebrating once again.

James Rodriguez was named the player of the tournament despite Colombia’s defeat in the Copa America 2024 final. His six assists topped the chart and also he scored a goal. Lautaro Martinez received the golden boot of the tournament.
