No team was willing to back down until Lautaro Martinez scored a brilliant goal in extra time, bringing Argentina to the brink of victory against Colombia. After the second half, in the 64th minute, Lionel Messi was injured and had to be substituted. A tearful Messi left the field, and his colleagues took the responsibility to win the title for their country.
The match’s start was delayed due to a large number of ticketless fans trying to enter the stadium, requiring significant intervention from security personnel to resolve the issue. Argentina, as the Champions of America, will face Spain, the champions of Euro 2024, in the finalissima. UEFA and CONMEBOL signed a memorandum of understanding on 15th December 2021. As per it, the winners of both the tournaments will play its maiden finalissima between Argentina and Spain in 2025.
