Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin End Their 7-Year Relationship Amid Career Conflicts—What Drove Them Apart

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have decided to cancel their engagement and end their seven-year relationship. The Fifty Shades of Grey actress and the Coldplay frontman, who had been one of Hollywood’s most stable and admired couples, have broken up after growing apart due to their professional careers, according to the Daily Mail.

The couple, who began dating in 2017, had kept their relationship out of the public eye, except for a few appearances at events and on social media. Sources close to the couple have revealed that, although they tried to resolve their growing distance, they ultimately decided it was best to go their separate ways. The singer has been touring Europe with Coldplay, while Johnson has been focused on her acting career. “They both have personal priorities, passions, and work commitments which don’t naturally intertwine with each other,” the source continued. “They’ll always have love for each other but they have both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term.”

Apparently, the actress was photographed last weekend without her engagement ring while walking her dog in Malibu, where she used to live with the singer. Additionally, there has been speculation about their separation since May, when Martin gave a fan a ride, and she later posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the singer was “single.” However, the couple seemed to be together in June when a source told People magazine that their relationship was still “strong.” Now, a few months later, the couple has split after a summer in which they barely saw each other.

This is not the first time the couple has broken up. In 2019, they had a brief split, which was reportedly caused by Martin pressuring her to have children. Shortly afterward, they got back together. In December 2020, rumours surfaced that the couple had gotten engaged after images showed the actress wearing an emerald ring on her left hand. Finally, a source confirmed the couple’s engagement on March 8 of this year, mentioning that “they got engaged years ago, but they weren’t in a rush to get married.”

It is speculated that Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin began living together in 2021 in a house in Malibu. The actress’s father, Don Johnson, 74, seemed to confirm the relationship in an interview with Digital Spy, joking, “Yeah, that’s… uh, troubling, isn’t it? No, she’s a big girl, she can handle herself!” Her mother, actress Melanie Griffith, also commented on Chris Martin during a women’s empowerment lunch for the Global Gift Foundation USA, saying, “I adore him!” Finally, Johnson appeared to confirm her relationship with Martin in an interview with Tatler in September 2018, saying, “I’m not going to talk about it, but I’m very happy.”

From that moment on, the Madame Web actress was always a visible support for the Coldplay frontman, attending many of his concerts, and even directing a music video for the band’s song “Cry Cry Cry” in February 2020. Currently, both are miles apart, with Chris Martin busy with the European leg of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres world tour.
