One of the series’ most beloved actors is set to return after a seven-year absence. This much-anticipated comeback will take place during the 21st season, which will premiere next fall in the United States.
Many actors have come and gone over the years on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,‘ but it’s common that once they leave the series, we never see them again. Now, the medical drama has surprised everyone by announcing the unexpected return of an actress who last appeared on the show a staggering 17 years ago. Kali Rocha only portrayed Dr. Sydney Heron in eight episodes during the second, third, and fourth seasons of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ Sydney Heron first appeared to fill in for Bailey (Chandra Wilson) during her maternity leave. Memorable for her positive attitude toward life, she attempted to secure the position of chief resident at the hospital and even went on a date with Derek (Patrick Dempsey).
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Rocha’s return continues a kind of tradition on the show of bringing back characters who haven’t appeared in a long time. This has happened before with Kate Walsh, who returned as Addison in season 18 after nine years of absence, or Jessica Capshaw reprising her role as Arizona earlier this year after previously leaving the series in 2018. So far, it’s known that Rocha will return as Sydney Heron for three episodes in the 21st season of ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’

Instead of focusing on what Monica will bring as a pediatric surgeon, the scenes in the 20th season’s trailer show her interacting with Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), the head of neurosurgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. There is an instant tension between the two when Amelia interrupts Monica in the parking lot on her first day. Both seem surprised but amused when they meet later inside the hospital. Amelia and her partner Kai broke up in Grey’s Anatomy’s 19th season, which means Amelia is single and likely looking for new romantic connections, as she has never been alone for long in this series and its spin-off, Private Practice.
Ben Warren, the charismatic husband of Miranda Bailey (played by Chandra Wilson), was first introduced in the sixth season of Grey’s Anatomy in 2009 as an anesthesiologist.
