Prime Video has officially confirmed that Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft in their upcoming “Tomb Raider” live-action TV series. The production is set to begin on January 19, 2026.
Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” joins a legacy of actresses who have portrayed the iconic video game character. Angelina Jolie first brought Lara Croft to the big screen, followed by Alicia Vikander in a later film adaptation.
“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” Turner said in a statement. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got.”
The project brings together significant creative talent. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of the hit series “Fleabag,” will serve as creator, writer, and co-showrunner. Chad Hodge, known for “Wayward Pines” and “Good Behavior,” has joined as co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge. Jonathan van Tulleken, whose credits include “Shogun” and “The Changeling,” will direct and executive produce.
Waller-Bridge expressed her excitement about the project, stating: “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming.”
The series is produced through a partnership between several studios. Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics (the developer of the Tomb Raider video games), Wells Street Productions, and Legendary Television are all involved in bringing the project to life.
Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, highlighted the significance of the character: “Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time.”

The “Tomb Raider” series was first reported to be in development at Prime Video in January 2023, with an official greenlight following in May 2024. Turner’s involvement had been rumored since November 2024, but this announcement marks the first official confirmation of her casting.
The project stems from a wider agreement between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, via dj2 Entertainment’s (now Story Kitchen) first‑look deal with the studio to develop additional “Tomb Raider” stories across both series and films.
Turner acknowledged the pressure of taking on such a well-established role, noting: “They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”
The original Tomb Raider video game was created in 1996 by a team at British developer Core Design. Since then, Lara Croft has become one of gaming’s most recognizable characters, known for her archaeological adventures and action-packed explorations.
While the production date has been set, Prime Video has not yet announced an episode count, plot details, additional casting information, or a potential release window for the series.
The series is part of Waller‑Bridge’s overall Amazon deal, which was announced in 2019, and received a series order in May 2024. In an August 2025 interview highlighted by FandomWire, Turner said she was looking to take on projects that are ‘super unique and very niche.’
