Two Terms, One Democracy: Can the US Prevent a Putin-Like Power Grab?

Democracy, Power Grab, Presidential Term Limits, Putin, US Politics

When the US president appoints an ambassador to India, the appointment needs to be approved by the US Senate before the person can come to Delhi. This is done to check and balance the use of government machinery.

Under the US constitution, there is a separation of powers of Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. US Judges are appointed for a lifetime. The US president and Vice President are elected every four years. This year the US presidential race is between Kamala Harris, Vice President and Democratic nominee, and Donald Trump, former president and Republican candidate.

The President, the Vice President and State Governors are part of the US Executive. Any appointment done by the President is to be approved by the US Senate. That is why Judges, civil servants and ambassadors are appointed well in advance so that they can face scrutiny in the Senate.

The system of checks and balances has smoothly worked to avoid misuse of powers by any one of the three pillars of the government. The ability of each branch to respond to the actions of the other branches is the system of checks and balances.

Each branch of government can change acts of the other branches. The President can veto legislation created by Congress.

India, UK and France are among the countries where Judges are appointed by the judiciary. In the US, a judge can assume office only after s(he) is approved by the US Senate.

Thus separation of powers and checks and balances are an integral part of the US constitution.

Under the Constitution a person can become president only twice. This provision prohibits the occupancy of a despot in the US. But in Russia Putin has become a dictator as the Russian constitution was changed to suit his ambition. Such an eventuality in the US might be difficult due to the system of decentralisation, but not impossible.

In short, two principles of checks and balances and separation of powers have made the super power a remarkable democracy.
