Olympian and Indian star wrestler Vinesh Phogat is receiving support from all over the country after she was disqualified from the 50 kg final wrestling match in the recently concluded Paris Olympics. She was honored with a symbolic gold medal by the Khap Panchayat in her village of Balali, Haryana. This gesture was a significant recognition of her efforts and struggles.

After receiving such overwhelming support, Vinesh expressed her happiness, stating that this beautiful gesture will motivate other women sportspersons to take up the sport. She believes this will encourage them to have faith that they will receive support even during their lean phases. She also reminded everyone that their fight is not over, referring to the agitation carried out by wrestlers protesting against BJP leader and former Chief of the Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sexual harassment.

Vinesh emphasized, “My fight has not ended; it has rather just begun. The fight for our daughters’ honor has just started. We said the same thing during our sit-in. When I could not play in Paris, I thought I was very unfortunate, but after returning to India and experiencing all the love and support here, I feel that I am very fortunate.” She added that she would forever be indebted for this honor, which she considers above any medal.

Earlier in the month, Vinesh received a grand welcome upon her return from Paris. Thousands of supporters, including Khap Panchayats, were there to support their own daughter. The star wrestler remarked that this overwhelming welcome was much better than winning 1,000 Olympic medals. A huge number of fans gathered outside the Indira Gandhi International Airport and celebrated the moment with tunes and beats of the ‘dhol’.
