Deadpool & Wolverine Breaks $1 Billion Mark, Surpasses Joker to Become Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film Ever

Box Office, Deadpool, Marvel Studios, R-Rated Movies, Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine has met all expectations. The film has been an absolute box office triumph, bringing joy back to Marvel Studios. The company went all in for 2024 by scheduling only this film in theaters. The result has been extraordinary, as audiences responded just as expected. In just a few short weeks, the film has amassed enormous amounts of money solely from ticket sales.

Such has been the success that it recently surpassed the iconic $1 billion mark. And now, at last, it has achieved what seemed impossible. With $1.085 billion, it has broken the record set by Joker in 2019. Thus, Deadpool & Wolverine has become the highest-grossing R-rated (for adults) film of all time. The movie, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has now surpassed the $1.078 billion milestone that Joaquin Phoenix’s film reached.

The company itself announced the achievement through a fun video on social media and a statement signed by Kevin Feige, thanking fans for their support. From now on, just three weeks after its release, the film’s only mission is to raise the bar as high as possible. For now, its box office performance is very solid, so we can only wait and see how far it can go. But there is no doubt anymore that Deadpool & Wolverine is the blockbuster Marvel needed to rise from the ashes. And this, despite the fact that adult films have a much harder time making good numbers.

At the same time, Deadpool & Wolverine is now solidified as the second highest-grossing film of the year. The film has outperformed grosses like Despicable Me 4, Dune 2, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The only film ahead of it is Inside Out 2, which continues its triumphant climb by surpassing $1.6 billion. It has, in fact, become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It has even entered the top 10 most successful films of all time, surpassing The Avengers and approaching The Lion King (2019) and Jurassic World.

Deadpool & Wolverine: The Threat of the Joker However, though it seems difficult, Deadpool & Wolverine‘s joy may be short-lived. On October 4th, Joker 2: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters. The highly anticipated sequel is perhaps the only film on the horizon in the coming years that could endanger the newly achieved record. If it follows in its predecessor’s footsteps, it is likely to surpass $1 billion and, at the very least, come close to Marvel’s film.

It’s still early for box office estimates, but no scenario can be ruled out. In any case, the success of Deadpool & Wolverine makes it clear that R-rated superhero films work. In this ranking, in fourth and fifth positions, after Joker and Oppenheimer, are the first two Deadpool films. Assuming Joker 2 also reaches these figures, five of the six top spots will be occupied by comic book-based films. The only exception would be the acclaimed film about the father of the atomic bomb.
