Fox Television Network has officially canceled “The Great North” after five seasons, ending the animated comedy’s run just weeks after its season finale aired on September 14, 2025. The network confirmed the decision in early October, bringing closure to the series about the Alaskan Tobin family.
“We’re so grateful for everything Wendy, Lizzie, Loren and the amazing cast and crew put into The Great North,” said Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network. “It’s difficult to say goodbye, but we’re thankful for the five hilarious seasons The Great North brought to the iconic Animation Domination lineup.”
The cancellation didn’t come as a surprise to industry watchers. Signs pointed to the show’s end when it was noticeably absent from Fox’s 2025-26 season announcement in May. The network had already secured its animation slate through a major deal announced in April, which included four-year renewals for “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers,” plus the return of “American Dad!” to Fox. With additional renewals for newer animated series “Krapopolis” and “Grimsburg,” the Sunday night schedule simply ran out of room.
Viewership numbers tell part of the story behind the decision. Season 5 averaged about 532,000 viewers with delayed playback included, making it the lowest-performing comedy at Fox and the least-watched scripted series on the network for the 2024-25 season.
The series followed single dad Beef Tobin (voiced by Nick Offerman) raising his children in Alaska, including daughter Judy (Jenny Slate), whose artistic dreams pulled her away from the family fishing boat and toward the local mall. The voice cast also featured Will Forte, Dulcé Sloan, Paul Rust, and Aparna Nancherla as the other Tobin siblings, with Megan Mullally as Judy’s boss and singer Alanis Morissette appearing as herself in the Northern Lights as Judy’s imaginary friend.
Created by Wendy and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin along with writer Minty Lewis, the show shared creative DNA with “Bob’s Burgers” through the Molyneux sisters and executive producer Loren Bouchard. The series was produced by 20th Television Animation with animation by Bento Box Entertainment.

The show’s director, Aimee Steinberger, confirmed the cancellation through social media. “Sadly we got the news today that The Great North is officially cancelled. I’m pretty sad about it,” she wrote. “It’s one of a very small number of shows I’ve worked on that I genuinely loved.”
Steinberger also offered fans a glimmer of hope, noting that animated shows sometimes find new life: “It’s always possible! Futurama came back like 3 times.” She added that a five-season run is “definitely respectable, especially in the past few years’ economy.”
Co-creator Wendy Molyneux also addressed the show’s end on Instagram, thanking the crew and fans: “Keep recommending it. You never know! Animation never dies!”
Despite the cancellation, the show earned recognition during its run, including nominations for an Annie Award in 2025 and a Critics Choice Award in 2022.
Fans can still watch all five seasons on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally. The final episodes of Season 5 were scheduled to arrive on Disney+ in the UK on October 1, 2025.
With the decision on “The Great North,” Fox has now addressed all its bubble shows for 2025, having previously canceled “Rescue HI-Surf,” “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” and “The Cleaning Lady,” while putting drama “Accused” on hold with the possibility of a future return.
For now, Fox’s Animation Domination lineup moves forward with its long-running hits and newer entries, leaving “The Great North” as a five-year chapter in the network’s animation history.
