Boxing Controversy, Exhibition match, Floyd Mayweather, John Gotti III, Referee decisions

Former boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather outclassed John Gotti III, the grandson of the late New York crime boss, in an exhibition match on Saturday. However, the manner in which Mayweather won the match raised several questions, and the New York crowd was not pleased. There was confusion when Mayweather continued the fight despite the bell not ringing. In the second round, Mayweather reportedly punched the referee, which is forbidden in boxing. As a result, referee Hector Afu left the ring, and Mexican referee Alfredo Uruzquieta stepped in to continue the match.

Interestingly, Mayweather retired from boxing in 2017 with an unbeaten record of 50 bouts. However, he continues to participate in exhibition matches that do not count toward his career record. His opponent in this match, Gotti, is the grandson of John Gotti, the former head of the Gambino crime family. Gotti’s grandfather died in prison in 2002. Before entering boxing, John Gotti III had an impressive record of 5-1 in MMA fights. Mayweather has also fought against various opponents, including reality show stars and YouTube fighters, in other exhibition matches.

Mayweather performed exceedingly well to secure victory over Gotti III despite several controversies throughout the match. After the match, Mayweather spoke with Mexican boxing legend Cesar Chavez, acknowledging his respect for Chavez’s contributions to the sport. Mayweather noted, “He’s older now, and if I do an exhibition with him, it’s not going to look good on me. He paved the way for me and does so much for the sport of boxing and for all the young Mexican fighters after him. This is one of the guys who paved the way; he’s one of the best fighters of all time.” Although this was an exhibition match, and no official winner was declared, Mayweather’s dominance was evident. Their previous exhibition match in June 2023 also ended in controversy, with the bout being stopped in the sixth round due to insults from both sides.
