President Biden said that he was withdrawing from the race and supporting Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place, citing strong pressure from members of his party. After declaring that she would run for the nomination, Ms. Harris stated, “Together, we will fight.” And we’ll succeed together.

Due to intense pressure from his closest supporters to withdraw from the campaign, President Biden, 81, gave up on his attempt to win reelection on Sunday. Deeply ingrained concerns existed that he was too old and frail to defeat former President Donald J. Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris said that she would seek the candidacy instead of Mr. Biden, and many Democrats quickly embraced her.

“While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus entirely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Mr. Biden said in a statement. In a social media post, Mr. Biden offered Ms. Harris his “full support and endorsement.” “Democrats, let’s unite and defeat Trump,” he continued. “Let’s carry out this.” In addition to expressing her gratitude for Mr. Biden’s support, Ms. Harris stated that her goal was to “earn and win” the party’s candidacy. “We will fight together,” she said.

Abrupt withdrawal: Mr. Biden’s choice puts an end to the political crisis that erupted after the president’s performance in the June 27 debate against Mr. Trump. The Democratic convention to select the nominee is scheduled for late August. The “Biden for President” campaign group has formally filed papers to rebrand itself “Harris for President,” so she has some advantages over other candidates. Still, Democrats are making suggestions about possible selections.

Seized on the moment, Mr. Trump attacked Mr. Biden, claiming he was never qualified to be president and attacking the news media and the political establishment in Washington, claiming they “did everything they could to protect” him.
