Ann Coulter is facing a wave of backlash after mocking Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s son, Gus, for his emotional response when his father accepted the Democratic nomination for Vice President of the United States. Gus Walz, 17, won millions of hearts on Wednesday night with his tearful reaction to his father at the convention. The video showed tears streaming down Walz’s face as he stood up and pointed to the stage, proudly shouting, “That’s my dad,” during his father’s national spotlight debut. Gus has a nonverbal learning disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and an anxiety disorder, the Walz family told People magazine earlier this month.
In a now-deleted post on X, the conservative commentator wrote, “Talk about weird…” with a link to an article about Walz’s reaction. Following swift backlash, Ann Coulter has deleted the post. Although she removed the post, Coulter didn’t escape criticism from those defending Gus and other neurodivergent individuals. “I took it down as soon as someone told me he’s [autistic], but it’s Democrats who go around calling everyone weird thinking it’s hilariously funny,” she wrote, seemingly referencing critics of Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump, and his running mate J.D. Vance.
“I am neurodivergent. When I was 14, I was diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, and several learning disorders, including dyscalculia. We’re not weird, we’re wonderful. And we’re your family, friends and fellow Americans,” wrote Moms Demand founder and activist Shannon Watts on X. The X account ‘Republicans Against Trump’ criticized the MAGA group for mocking a child with special needs who was showing love to his father, expressing that there seemed to be no limit to their behavior.
