Johannes Pietsch, known as JJ, has brought Austria its third Eurovision crown with a powerful blend of opera and modern pop. The 24-year-old countertenor’s victory in Basel, Switzerland marks Austria’s first win since Conchita Wurst topped the scoreboard in 2014.

JJ’s journey to Eurovision glory started in Vienna’s prestigious State Opera choir. His classical training shines through in “Wasted Love,” where his voice soars to heights typically heard in opera houses rather than pop concerts. The song explores themes of unreciprocated love, set against a backdrop that looked like a storm-tossed ship on stage.
The final vote count kept viewers on edge. JJ secured 258 points from professional juries and 178 from public votes, totaling 436 points. Israel’s Yuval Raphael came second with 357 points, while Estonia’s Tommy Cash took third with 356 points.
“I feel very humbled and honored that my artwork is being so well accepted,” JJ told reporters before his win. “This is the kind of music I want to continue making.” After receiving the trophy, he broke down in tears, urging everyone to “spread more love” in the world.
