Biden’s Verbal Gaffes at NATO Summit Prompt 17 Democrats to Call for His Withdrawal—What Did He Say?

President Joe Biden experienced significant missteps during a press conference on the anniversary of NATO in Washington, D.C., including referring to Donald Trump as “vice president” when he meant Vice President Kamala Harris. He stated, “Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president did I think she was not qualified to be president” This error was quickly mocked by former President Trump on his Truth Social network, saying, “Fraudulent Joe kicks off his ‘Big Boy’ press conference by saying, ‘Crooked Joe begins his “Big Boy” Press Conference with, “I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president, though I think she was not qualified to be president.” Great job, Joe!”

Additionally, during the NATO summit, Biden mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin.” Realizing the mistake, he corrected himself with, “President Putin! You must defeat President Putin!… President Zelensky! I am so focused on defeating Putin.” Zelensky responded humorously, stating, “I am better” (than Putin).

Following these gaffes, a growing movement within the Democratic Party, reportedly orchestrated by former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, seeks to replace Biden. Congressman Jim Himes, the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, expressed on X, “Joe Biden’s record of public service is unrivaled. His accomplishments are immense. His legacy as a great president is secure. He must not risk that legacy, those accomplishments and American democracy to soldier on in the face of the horrors promised by Donald Trump.” Along with him, Eric Sorensen of Illinois, Scott Peters of California, and a total of 17 Democratic congressmen have urged Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.

Despite these challenges and the campaign led by some party members to persuade him to step aside, Biden remains steadfast in his candidacy. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue in the electoral race and expressed confidence in defeating Trump again, stating, “I beat him once, and I will do it again.” Biden also mentioned, “The campaign hasn’t really started, it hasn’t really started seriously yet,” highlighting the long journey still ahead.

In response to questions about his physical condition since the CNN presidential debate on June 27, White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged that a Parkinson’s specialist had visited several times but denied that Biden was receiving treatment for it. Despite these episodes, Biden downplayed calls for him to end his reelection campaign, asserting that doubts about his candidacy at this point in the presidential race were not unusual.
