Earlier, after winning the toss, England opted to bat first in their league stage game against Sri Lanka at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru on Thursday.
With this win, Sri Lanka is on No. 5 position in the points table. Pakistan is on No. 6 position, while Afghanistan has occupied the seventh position. Bangladesh, England, and Netherlands are on No. 8, 9, and 10 positions. This is the lowest World Cup total against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s winning run against England goes up to 5 games in World Cups.
It was a clinical win from the Lankans today. It started with the ball as Lahiri Kumara picked 3 wickets. With support from Angelo Matthews & Kushan Rajitha, Sri Lanka bowled out England for 156. Its start with the bat was a bit shaky. Kushal Perera & skipper Kushal Mendis departed with the team’s total on 23. But the widow of hope provided to England was closed promptly by the 137-run association between Sadeera Samaravickrama & Pathum Nissanka. Both slammed fifties to get Sri Lanka its second win of the tournament.
As for England, the less said the better. Its World Cup defense, which started with a loss exactly 3 weeks back, is in tatters & nearly over. It has been one batting collapse after another for the side & today’s performance was symptomatic of the problems that have plagued England so far in the tournament.
