The candidates for this year’s US presidential elections are Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party and Donald Trump of the Republican Party. The running mate of Harris is Tim Walz, while JD Vance is Trump’s candidate for Vice President. There is a two-tier process that is followed for electing a new president.

On Tuesday, the 5th of November 2024, the American people in every state across the country are going to vote for their chosen candidates for the posts of President and Vice President. When Americans go to the polls in November, they will select their favorite presidential candidate and their running mate.

When people cast their vote, they are actually voting for a group of people called electors. Except in the states of Maine and Nebraska, if a candidate receives the majority of the votes from the people of a state, then the candidate will receive all electoral votes of that state. This is called an electoral college.

The electoral college will elect one of these 2 candidates as 47th US president on the 5th of November, Tuesday. The electoral college is a process in which electors or representatives from each state, in numbers proportional to the state’s population, vote and determine who will be next president. Each state gets a certain number of electors based on its representation in Congress.
