Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed on Saturday that he was shot while giving a speech at a political event in Butler, Pennsylvania. In a brief statement posted on his Truth social media, he expressed his astonishment at the dangerous situation and detailed the events. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” he said. He added, “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
In the message, Trump also thanked the United States Secret Service and all law enforcement for their quick response to the shooting. He appeared visibly shaken by the incident. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country,” he stated. This incident occurred two days before the Republican National Convention, which will take place in Milwaukee, where he will be officially nominated as the presidential candidate.
The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old white man from Pennsylvania. Authorities do not currently know his motivations or whether he acted alone or had accomplices. Local media outlet WTAE in Pittsburgh reported that the shooter used an AR-15 rifle and fired eight shots before being neutralized by Secret Service agents. The deceased attacker caused the death of a rally attendee, injured Trump in the right ear, and left two others seriously wounded in the audience.
