Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a post on X issued a statement regarding Trump’s tariff notice and call for dropping of legal proceedings against Bolsonaro. Lula in the statement made a firm stance against Trump’s demand, iterating that Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and does not need any form of “tutelage.” Defending the legal jurisdiction the Brazilian President said that any interference and threats in the legal proceedings are deemed to undermine the independent nature of institutions of Brazil.

Donald Trump in a letter notified that Brazil has to pay a 50 per cent tariff on its products entering the US. This is the highest unilateral tariff Trump has set in a series of letters notifying other countries of new tariffs since Monday this week.
Also the letters read differently than the earlier ones. Trump in the letter complains about the alleged “witch hunt” former president Jair Bolsonaro is subjected to. He asked to immediately stop this trail.
The former President is under trial for an alleged coup after losing in the 2022 presidential election.
Trump accuses Brazil of unfair trade practices and threatened to call for investigation under Section 301 of the U.S Trade Act 1974.
New trade tariffs for Sri Lanka have been notified through a letter which was posted on Trump’s Truth Social account. According to the letter a 30 per cent tariff will be levied on Sri Lankan products imported to the U.S.
