President Trump visited Texas flood zones on Friday where the Guadalupe River’s dramatic 26-foot rise in under an hour killed at least 121 people, including dozens of children at Camp Mystic summer camp. Trump toured the devastation with Texas Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Melania Trump, avoiding the harsh criticism he typically directs at Democratic governors during disasters while praising his relationship with the Republican Abbott. The search continues for over 170 missing people with more than 2,100 responders on the ground, as questions mount about warning systems and whether National Weather Service staff cuts may have hampered emergency communications.

Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil filed a $20 million legal claim against the Trump administration after spending 104 days in immigration detention for his role in campus protests at Columbia University.

The 30-year-old graduate student alleges he was falsely imprisoned and maliciously prosecuted while missing his newborn son’s birth during his detention at a Louisiana facility. Khalil was arrested in March without a warrant by federal agents and held on claims he posed “adverse foreign policy consequences,” though he was never charged with any crime or linked to terrorist groups.

His lawyers filed the Federal Tort Claims Act case targeting the Department of Homeland Security, ICE, and State Department, with Khalil saying he would accept either the settlement money or an official government apology.

The U.S Department of State is planning to implement what is officially known as reduction in force (RIF) or mass layoffs after the Supreme Court on Tuesday gave way to Trump’s plan for mass reduction in federal workforce after it lifted an order by the U.S District Judge Susan Illston in May temporarily blocked the order the while the case proceeded.

Donald Trump in a letter decided to hike tariffs for Canadian products sent to the U.S. Trump in the letter blamed the Canadian government’s failure to curb the supply of fentanyl into the US which in part was the reason for the Fentanyl crisis. Starting August 1, a 35% tariff is to be levied on all Canadian products entering the US separate from all sectorial tariffs.

Trump’s new tariffs are already hitting shoppers where it hurts most – their wallets and shoe closets. Coffee lovers face major price jumps as Brazil, which supplies one-third of America’s beans, now faces a crushing 50% tariff starting August 1st, while shoe prices could spike up to 39% since almost every pair sold in America comes from countries like Vietnam, China, and Bangladesh that are getting slapped with tariffs between 20% to 54%.

Companies like Nike and coffee roasters are warning they’ll have no choice but to pass these costs straight to customers, with some coffee shops already raising prices 10% and shoe retailers preparing for back-to-school season sticker shock. The Yale Budget Lab calculates families will pay an extra $2,300 per year on average, making this the biggest hit to household budgets in decades.
